A bit of a buzzword nowadays, HIIT (pronounced “hit”) workouts are the big thing in the fitness industry as of late. Let’s discuss the benefits of incorporating HIIT workouts into your exercise routine and how to do so effectively.

 What is HIIT?

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. HIIT workouts consist of short periods of high intensity exercise followed by longer periods of rest. For example, a traditional steady state workout may last an hour where the majority of that hour is spent at a low or moderate intensity. Think jogging, hiking, or cycling. 

On the other hand, high intensity interval training will usually be shorter and switch between low and high intensity. For example, short fifteen second sprints followed by one minute walks would be high intensity interval training. A workout like this may only last thirty minutes as opposed to the hour long steady state workout.

Benefits of HIIT

One of the most well established benefits of high intensity interval training is that you can burn more calories in less time when compared to steady state workouts. Studies show that HIIT workouts can burn up to 30% more calories than steady state workouts do. Additionally, high intensity interval training has been shown to increase one’s metabolic rate, allowing you to burn calories for hours after you’ve finished the actual exercise.
